Thank you for another great year at The Classic Race. I am amazed every year at the production that comes off in Layton Commons Park on the second weekend in September. Thanks to the sponsors, volunteers, committee, staff, vendors and runners that make The Classic Race exactly that - a classic race that we look forward to participating in each year.

This year, thanks to our generous sponsors, 100% of the runners' registration fees will be going directly to Heart Services at McKay-Dee Hospital. These funds will be used for equipment and staff and community education to help fight against heart disease - the number one cause of death in the United States. It's time to roll again. The race is this weekend. I'd bet a lot of you are checking here on the BLOG for some last minute updates and to see if you can register because online registration is closed. So, here is the info you'll want.

YOU CAN STILL REGISTER... Registration prices have gone up, but you can still register. There are two more opportunities for you to register.

PACKET PICKUP
Packet pickup is going to be on Friday at the Layton Commons Park (the same park as the race). We'll be near the Ed Kenley Amphitheater from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Come get your race packets, shirts, and all your questions answered.

You can also pick up your race packets on race day starting at 7:00 a.m. The registration/packet pickup with stop promptly at 7:45 a.m. to make sure everyone is at the starting line. If you get there late, you won't be timed, but you can still get your SWAG after the race.

LAYTON COMMONS PARK
For those of you that haven't raced with us before, we start and finish at Layton Commons Park. The start/finish area is in the parking lot of the Layton City Offices, Police Station, Ed Kenley Amphitheater and Surf 'n Swim. We are directly across the road from Layton High School. If you are unfamiliar with the area, come early to find us. I've heard that the place is difficult to find in year's past.

RACE START
The 10k will start promptly at 8:00 a.m. There will be a 5 minute stagger to get all the 10k folks out of the way and through a small bottleneck about .5 miles into the race course. The 5k will then start. The KidsK will start after awards around 9:45 a.m. Bring your kids our for s super fun time. They get some great SWAG, a shirt and a fun jog through the park with the ducks all for $15.

OTHER QUESTIONS
Any additional questions, call or write soon. You will not be able to get ahold of us on Friday or Saturday, unless you come to the park. We won't be checking email, phones, or the BLOG because we're getting ready to pull off a super-awesome event for you. If you have questions, come to the park. If you have concerns, come to the park. Thanks to all of you for coming out and supporting The Classic Race this morning. Once again, it was a beautiful morning for us. Thanks to you and our sponsors we will be able to put a lot of money into heart services for the community.

As we always do, we want to hear what you have to say. As I told many of you, you are the eyes on the course for us. Although, I get to run the course multiple times getting ready for it, I don't actually get to see too much of it on race day. It's the Final Count Down!

We've got two weeks till race day folks. Two weeks from now we'll all be exchanging hellos and well wishes at packet pickup. We'll also be checking out our totally awesome race shirts for this year. Thanks to everyone that put in their ideas for this year's shirts. I'm sure you'll love it!

Speaking of packet pickup we've had some questions about it. So here is all the info you'll need.

One Month Out

It is hard to believe, but one month from now, it will all be over. You'll be on your way home from another Classic Race sorting through all your SWAG, trying on your totally hip new shirt, and bragging about your blazing fast time. you have some crazy story about how you ran through the wall to get past that person that kept in front of you the whole race and eat an extra donut for your efforts.

Alright! Come back from dreamy land now. Time to register. Hop over to ACTIVE.com right now to register online, or get into Striders or the McKay-Dee Hospital Foundation Office to get your registration all set up. We're hitting the town with posters and registration forms this week. That means registrations will start piling in. You're still good for being one of the first 800 guaranteed shirts.

If you're going for a PR you may want to hit the course a few times to get your legs familiar with what you're going to have to do to accomplish it. Start planning your patriotic wear for our September 11th special edition race.

Tips for Running in the Heat at Runner's World

So, I'm becoming a Runner's World junkie again. I used to devour Runner's World through junior high and high school, then set it aside along with running for a while. As I've come back to running again, I've dug back to get the secrets from the pros. Thanks to my sister-in-law and a very fine Christmas present I now enjoy Runner's World in my home every month.

For you, I'm sending out this link to a great article about summer running. The heat season and monsoon humidity are making training more difficult. The article has quite a few tips for how to train smart in the extreme temperatures of Utah.

New Stuff for the Classic Race

Don't worry, we're not going to change much. We know you love the race, you've told us that over and over. However, we do get a few ideas from all of our participants every year and we try to pull them into our planning for the next year.

One big thing we're doing this year is amping up the kids race. You may remember the KidsK that was part of The Classic Race last year. This year, we've brought it under our wing to really promote as a Classic Race event. The proceeds from this event will continue to go back to the kids. It will benefit an organization call Reach Out and Read. This encourages and enables kids to read and be read to. Here is a link to their national organization. The money will go to the local chapter here in northern Utah to support kids here in northern Utah. If you have any ideas about how to really make this an hot event for the kids, please let us know.

The Classic is going to remain a hot walk, 5k and 10k event. Every year you bring out more and more of your friends to have a great morning run with us in the park. Thanks to all of you for your support as we run to raise money for heart services in northern Utah. Every year, thanks to our sponsors who cover most of our costs, most of your entry fee goes directly into education, research, and equipment to improve the quality of healthcare in our community.

Gear up for our September 11th race this year. You can bet there will be some great surprises as we remember and thank our service men on this Patriot Day run.

It was great to see everyone at the Ogden Marathon Expo. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 10th Annual Ogden Marathon. It was a beautiful morning and a beautiful race day. I finally got to participate after being a runner from Ogden for nearly 20 years, all 10 years of the marathons existence.

If was fun to chat with all kinds members of The Classic Race family at the expo. Thanks for sharing your excitement for our September 11th race this year. We've ordered the shirts and are in full swing now preparing for the race that is only 4 months away. Add our races into your training plans because you won't want to miss this year's celebration! If you have any ideas on how to best celebrate and remember this special day please post them. We've got a few ideas up our sleeve, but are interested in what you would like to see happen on race day.

The Classic Race Review

Thanks to everyone for another successful year of The Classic Race. Our 25th Annual Race was a great event. Race results are posted and pics from our photographer are available for you to view and purchase. You can access those two things with the links at the right side of the page.

As we have in the past, we are asking for your review of the race. This year we are getting super tech-savvy and have created a quick online survey. Please take 3-5 minutes to complete the quick five question survey. The survey is completely anonymous. I'll never know who completed the survey, but if you don't complete the survey, I'll never know how to make the race better next year.

Three Days until the Race

So, now we are down to the wire. I've been flooded with calls regarding a few different things in preparation for the race. Here are the answers:

You can still register for the race. Though online registration is closed, we do registration up to race day. You can register at Striders in Layton, the McKay-Dee Foundation Office at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden up until Thursday. On Friday you can register at packet pickup at Layton Commons Park near the Ed Kenley Amphitheater from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Or, if you so choose, you can register at the park on race morning.

Currently, we still have shirts. I'm assuming we'll have shirts for everyone, but we'll see. Last year we had nearly half of our runners register in the last two weeks. Turns out that a lot of our runners are like me, wait until the morning of and then decide if you really feel like torturing your body through a tough speed workout. I wouldn't wait to register too long, especially if you are going for a special size on your shirt, but things are looking good for all you last minute registrars.

The race is at Layton Commons Park. This is the huge park in Layton that also houses Layton High School, the Layton City Offices, the Layton Police Station, Ed Kenley Amphitheater and Layton Surf 'n Swim. Registration/Packet pickup the morning of the race starts at 7:00 a.m. and will close promptly at 7:45 a.m. Don't wait until the last minute.

Packet pickup on Friday is from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Layton Commons Park, near the Ed Kenley Amphitheater. This is the start/finish area of the race. While registration prices have gone up, and pre-registration prices no longer exist, you can still come and register early, avoid the crowds of race morning and get a better chance of getting the right size shirt. You do not have to pick up your race packet on Friday, you can come brave the crowds on Saturday morning.

We ordered extra shirts this year for all of you that have requested to purchase an extra shirt in the past. These will be for sale following the race on Saturday, and only following the race on Saturday on a first-come-first serve basis if there are any shirts left. The shirts will be for sale for $20.

17 Days Until the 2009 Classic Race

The race is coming up quick now - and race registrations are coming in just as fast. The deadline for early registration is next weekend, so don't delay - register today! You can register at Striders in Layton, the McKay-Dee Hospital Foundation office at McKay-Dee Hospital, or online at Active.com. There are a few reminders we should put out there.

PACKET PICKUP: Packet pickup will be moved this year to the start/finish area of the race at Layton Commons Park (the north west side of the Ed Kenley Amphitheater). Packet pickup is on Friday, September 11th from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Come on Friday to get your grub and ask any questions you might have to avoid the craziness of race morning.

RACE SHIRTS: As we mentioned at last year's race - look for us in red this year. You've probably noticed the changes over to red around our marketing pieces and out at other races, but wait till you see this year's shirt. I think we've outdone ourselves again this year! But, it's our 25th anniversary - we had to do something cool with the shirts. So, we researched into some great dri-fit shirts and came up with an amazingly comfortable dri-fit long sleeve (Bamboo/Poly Blend) that you are going to love. You may even want to buy a few extra - like you did last year and the year before. I would unveil it on the BLOG, but I think you'll just have to wait for that one when you get your packet on the 11th or race morning! Be excited!

RACE PHOTOGRAPHER: This year, per your requests, we have brought in Universal Photography to do race photos this year. Look for the photogs along the course, at the start/finish and around the expo at the end of the race. You'll be able to purchase the photos of you sweating it up on race day! Thing of the glory in that one.

TEXT MESSAGE REMINDER: If you'd like a text message reminder of The Classic race, or if you'd like updates throughout the year of other events we've got going on text CLASSIC to 29222. The night before the race we'll send out a text with the start time (8:00 a.m.), the race address (Layton City Offices), and a phone number for any last minute questions you might have (my cell phone - yes I am crazy, please be nice).

STAGGARED START: Per your request as well, and because the race is growing so fast, we've decided to staggar the race start this year. We'll start with the 10k folks running out right at 8:00 a.m. We'll give them 5 minutes to get out of our sight, then we'll send the 5k-ers and the walkers off to catch them - kinda like fox and the hounds. This may raise concern in some of your minds about timing, but the awesome guys at STRIDE RACING that are timing the event are going to fix the times that that all participants will get their right time posted.

Also, we'll have some signs as the staging area to try and get people running at like-speeds together. We'll be placing the faster folks up front then slowly move back. Look for the signs with your pace on them (ie for the 5k the signs might read Sub-20 min, 20-24 minutes, 24-28 minutes and 28+ minutes). We hope this will help us avoid any trampling incidents at the start. Please be cautious at the start - we're trying to fit a lot of people in a small area.

6 Weeks Out, Oh My!

Holy Smokes... this summer is flying by and we are drawing close to race time. We've got some great stuff added to the race this year, and we've got some strong support again. As you know we're celebrating 25 years, and it'll be quite the celebration.

Some of the additions you'll see this year!

Kids Races: The Reach Out and Read Program will be having a 1 mile kids race immediately following our races. They are also bringing out all kinds of vendors and fun activities for your kids. Check out the Reach Out and Read Program on the web to learn more about the program, or register for the kids races on Active.com.
Maize Days: The Davis Arts Council is hosting Maize Days this year the same weekend as the race. This means that there will be all kinds of activities Friday and Saturday. Make a weekend in Layton for the family with the race and Maze Days. Heck make it a whole week and come Labor Day weekend for the Antelope Island Balloon and Kite Stampede.
Faster Awards and Drawings: We've revamped the awards ceremony and drawings. We'll still have tons of prizes to give away - special thanks to all our sponsors for that - but, we'll do it in half the time if that. I've been challenged to do awards in under 30 minutes, I may be done in 15. Come see if I can do it!

Some of the same things you'll see this year!

We're keeping the course. You like it. I like it. The city likes it. Why would we change it then? The course will be a slick as last year, with a few changes to how we start the race this year to help with the bottleneck as we get on the Bamburger Trail.
Awesome Shirts! Most runners know when they come to The Classic Race they get a sweet shirt. We've outdone ourselves again. This year not only do you get an excellent long-sleeve dri fit shirt that you'll want to wear all winter long, you'll be saving the environment at the same time. Our shirts this year are a bamboo/poly blend. If you've never run in a bamboo/poly shirt, don't miss out on this one. The shirt has the same great moisture technology, but it's more comfortable. The bamboo is really soft and feels great on your skin - if you can even feel it!
Great price! Even though we are raising funds for Heart Services, we are committed to keeping this race affordable for families. This year we lowered our prices - thanks again to all of our sponsors stepping up so we could do this. Each race is only $25 bucks. No more diliberating between the races because of price. Everyone gets the same shirt, everyone pays the same fee.
Family friendly walk. The walk will remain an uncompetitive (untimed) walk. Historically the walk has been a walk int he park for family and friends. It all started with a group of friends trying to raise money for the family of a co-worker that died of a heart attack leaving his family. It quickly grew to a reunion of rejoicing for the ability to exercise for many patients that had had heart incidents. The walk in the park will remain an uncompetitive (untimed), friendly walk for anyone that want to come out and rejoice in the ability to exercise.

As the Ogden Marathon approaches and the nervous vibes start to ring through our bodies, we offer our support and well wishes to all of you participating in the marathon, half-marathon, 5k or kids k at the Ogden Marathon.

We hope to see many of you at the Ogden Marathon Expo. Just like last year, this serves as our first real kick off for entries to The Classic Race. We'll have some SCHWAG as well as some free offerings from McKay-Dee Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Services.

All you cyclists, come check out our sweet BIKE FIT Program. This program will get you fit on your bike to help you avoid injury and increase your speed and endurance. Our sports med docs and therapists will also have a table set up to help you out with any nagging pains you may be experiencing. As well as at the finish line of the marathon for all of the pains and delusion that everyone will be feeling after 26.2, 13.1 or 5k.

Come by and visit us. Enter a drawing for some free entries to The Classic, some cool SCHWAG, or just to shoot the breeze - maybe we'll even bring some goodies with us. We'll be at the Expo at the Ogden Union Station all day Friday 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Our area is inside the Ogden Union Station with all of the other Official Sponsors of the Ogden Marathon.

We're getting back into order for this year's exciting 25th Year of The Classic Race. Registration is now open on Active.com. We're lining up some great shirts and working through a few of your requests for this year's race. For all your ladies, we've secured some X-Small shirts.

Now, to the more exciting news! WE HAVE 8 ENTRIES TO THE SOLD OUT OGDEN MARATHON! These are up for your grabs. You can use these for the marathon or the half-marathon coming up on May 16th. We, in conjunction with McKay-Dee Sports Medicine, are happy to offer these to all of the supporters of The Classic Race.

Here's what you do. Text 'McKay' to the number 29222. This will enter you into the pool. We'll randomly draw winners on March 20th and announce them that same day. Cut off for entry is midnight on March 19th. Feel free to invite all of your friends to join in the pool as well.

Hello there Classic Racers! Here we are with a few pics from the event this year. We'll be putting more up here soon, but wanted to get these out for you to check out.

Also, the BIG announcement. Next year we've told you to look for us in RED. Now, we've got the date. Look for us on September 12, 2009. We had an overwhelming approval of the date of the race, despite a few conflicting races, so we've decided to do it on the second Saturday of September again. Look for us on September 12th, 2009 in RED for Heart Services.

WOW! I'm speachless. Yes, the tall, skinny guy with the microphone can be speachless.

We had a great race this year, full of blistering times on the new coarse. When I saw the 10k times coming across this morning, I wondered if I had something wrong with the distances. Then I saw the accurate GPS reading on the course and was put back in my place. Congratulations to all that finished all three events.

Thank you so much for your help, donations, and support this year. I think the race went really well, but I'm just the tall, skinny guy that is pretty optimistic and outspoken. I want to hear what everyone else thought. Please drop me an email, post to our BLOG or give me a call. You have me contact information in your race bag. The honest and candid feedback we get from you, though it may hurt my pride sometimes, is what makes the race better. This is a race we organize for you the runner/walker. We want to improve it for you. So, send those firery darts, and the nice notes as well. Let us know what was good, and what wasn't so good.

"Run for your Heart"

Ready, Set, GO!!!

Here we are folks, a few days before the race. We're very excited for this year's Classic Race. We have a lot of people registered and a great day set up.

A few quick items we've been getting a lot of calls about.

RACE PACKET PICKUP!
You can pick up your race packet the day before the race, or the morning of the race. Most of you will want to come and get your packets the day before the race, to avoid all that race morning craziness of last minute registrations, etc. For you we will be at the Layton Hills Mall on Friday from 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. We'll be sitting at center court at the mall by where the escalators and the elevator are. Everyone else can come the morning of the race and look for the preregistered lines to get your packets. We are starting registration at 7:00 a.m. and will be closing registration at 7:45 a.m. Registration will be near the finish line, just to the north and west of the Ed Kenley Amphitheater (that's also where the ever so coveted restrooms are).

RACE START TIMES
This year, with our new timing system, we are able to start all the races at the same time. We will be starting all the races promptly at 8:00 a.m. All the races start in the parking lot in the middle of the Layton City Offices, the Layton City Police Offices and Layton Surf 'N Swim.

As always, we welcome your questions. We appreciate all of the help we have received thus far this year. Please keep your eyes, ears and noses open to anything we can do to improve our race this year. We'll have some contact information for you in your race bag for you to tell your stories and make your suggestions - feel free to also post to our blog!

A Few Course Changes

The Classic is coming up fast as summer time rolls on. As we near the end of the summer everyone is planning their parties and end of summer activities. Likewise we are seeing a lot of runners that are planning their last few events before the cold season kicks in.

Runners aren't the only ones holding late summer activities, however. Layton City approached The Classic about the possibility of altering the race course to accommodate various groups requesting to use different areas of the park. We've taken into consideration Layton City's great support of The Classic in securing the course and offering police support and have put a few minor changes in to the course originally planned for this year's race. Please check the links on the right hand column of this page to view the new course maps.

While we apologize to those of you that have been scouting out the course and also to those of you that really look forward to the day The Classic reaches a stable course again, we think all of you will enjoy the changes we've made. All races will start and finish near the Ed Kenley Amphitheater in the park and we will utilize the facilities around the amphitheater for all race day activities (i.e. registration, start, finish, expo, prizes and food). Parking will also be a plus as we'll be able to utilize the city office building and Layton High School parking lots.

Again, thank you for your continued support in helping The Classic raise money for McKay-Dee Heart Services. We appreciate your input as we work to make this race the premier running event in Davis County, Utah.

The Official Running Store of the Classic

Without the help of Striders' fabulous owners and staff last year the Classic Race wouldn't have been a race at all. John and Kristin Wojciechowski donated hours of time, tons of race course supplies, swag and of course race expertise that was invaluable.

Striders is the official running store of The Classic Race and we're excited to have them as our partner for the 2008 race. They are located in Layton at 1986 N. Hillfield Road - but will soon be moving in to a new larger space just around the corner to 1776 N. Hillfield Road.

Striders opened its doors in February 2004 offering specialty running services including shoes, apparel, supplements as well as sponsoring local running events and training sessions. A Dream, A Goal, A Reality

Lynnette Hancock shares her thoughts about The Classic Race…

Doing a 5K has been a “dream” and goal for many years, but being overweight made it seem impossible. After losing 40 pounds by walking, I began to think maybe I could do a 5K. I was nervous because I knew I would have to walk most of it. When I went to Striders to sign up, the man there assured me that walking would be fine.

So I committed to doing the 5K.

Friday when I picked up my packet, a cute gal who was helping with the race asked my husband if he was going to be my cheerleader. He told her that he wasn’t going to be able to be there until the end, so she assured me that her husband would cheer for me. Saturday morning she found me and introduced me to her husband, Lane. Lane told me he would be there cheering for me.

Early Saturday morning the 10K runners started first. I made sure I was at the beginning of the 5K runners when they started off, because I knew it would be the last time I would be at the front. Sure enough…within three steps I had been passed by most of the runners. I did do some running but mostly walked. I was so tired the last half mile and was just dragging along. Another volunteer came up and said she would run with me. We ran a ways together, and she as so cute about it. Talk about positive reinforcement. As I approached the end, there was Lane. He was screaming “come on, Lynnette, you can do it!” I was impressed that not only was he cheering for me, he even called me by my first name.

Of course, I was near the end and some of the 10K runners had lapped me, yet I was touched by how many runners gave me a thumbs up or word of encouragement. The Classic was so well organized, and the people involved with it were the greatest. Crossing the finish line was an incredible high. Even now the race last year still stands out as a "significant moment" in my life that I won't forget. It was something I NEVER thought I could do. Despite arthroscopic knee surgery in February, I am planning to do the Cherry Days 5k in North Ogden and I completed another 5k prior to the surgery.

I DEFINITELY WILL BE DOING THE CLASSIC AGAIN. I'm still not any faster, but more determined--and another year older.

The Classic at The Ogden Marathon '08

The History of The Classic

Layton, Utah's Premier 5k, 10k Road Race
Saturday, September 13, 2008

This year will be year number 24 for The Classic. The race was started to raise funds for a fellow employee who had a heart attack. The event starting from only a few friends quickly developed into a community fundraiser for heart services. After 22 years of supporting the event, The Standard-Examiner handed the event to Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital. While Intermountain has made some dramatic changes to the race, the cause remains the same - to benefit heart services in the northern Utah area.

Come join The Classic in raising funds to benefit heart services in the northern Utah area. The Classic is an event for all ages and abilities. Our sponsors help to put on an event that is both family friendly and challenging - not to mention full of participant benefits (ie we've got great prizes)!

This year the race will start and finish at Layton Commons Park in Layton, Utah, right next to Layton High School and Layton Surf N' Swim at 8:00 a.m.
